S&P 500 Index Fell

  Index S&P Fell

Target saw some of the steepest declines, after the firm issued a soft forecast for the holiday season.
Shares in the retailer fell nearly 10% after it said it expects sales at stores open at least one year to grow no more than 2%.
Energy giants Exxon Mobil and Chevron were also lower, with Exxon falling 1.25%.
Tech giant Apple, which has been boosted by its reports of strong sales of its new iPhones, also slipped 1.3%.
US indexes, which surged earlier this year, have been drifting lower since last week.
The fall comes as Washington wrestles with a controversial tax plan that would cut corporate tax rates, oil prices have fallen and investors expect higher interest rates in the US and elsewhere.
